De vereniging is opgericht in 1931 als een vereniging van medische specialisten, tandartsen, psychologen, psychotherapeuten, maatschappelijk werkers, sociaal psychiatrisch verpleegkundigen en mondhygiënisten die werken in gezondheidszorginstellingen en gebruik maken van hypnotische technieken binnen hun therapeutische professie. De vereniging stelt zich ten doel training te bevorderen en verzorgt opleiding en onderzoek op het gebied van hypnose; zij verenigt professionals in dit gebied met als doel de kwaliteit van psychologische en medische zorg en behandeling te verbeteren.
De woorden van wijlen Prof. dr. Ernst Hilgard tijdens het Internationale Congres van Hypnose in 1988 in Den Haag staan nog steeds hoog in het vaandel van de vereniging:
"We be careful in our claims, avoid the clashes of opinion among us that affect the public image and acceptance of hypnosis, do our best to maintain scientific standards in both laboratory and clinic, without dividing into cults, and work together to continue to advance hypnosis both as to its place in science, and as a benefit to suffering humanity".
